The article that was given to us by Mr. Walters called 'How Soccer Is Ruining America: A Jeremiad' written by Stephen H. Webb, demonstrates a variety of rhetorical devices backing up his ridiculous article of irrelevancy. Webb tries to back up his article about how soccer is ruining America, when he clearly states, "Last year all three of my kids were on three different soccer teams at the same time. My daughter is on a traveling team and she is quite good." Page 269 He is using the rhetorical device of ethos to present a relate-able situation in how his family participates in the "terrible" game of soccer. When Webb uses ethos, he is contradicting his own argument and becoming hypocritical because his own family is in the game of soccer and he is saying how soccer is a horrible sport towards Americans. He also uses ethos by bringing back a baseball story of his childhood and how baseball has strategy, language and is better than soccer. Webb used a form of metaphor by comparing the game of soccer to the "boring" games of golf and bowling. This did not help his argument at all, it just made him look like a fool by saying those previously mentioned sports are "boring." Webb uses logos by stating facts about soccer and how it is played to back up his argument about how soccer is a dumb sport. Logos is also being used when he goes back to where soccer was originated. Overall, Webb uses many rhetorical devices but he fails to realize that his arguments are pointless statements being thrown into an article about a dumb topic.
